Hyperthyroidism

Hyperthyroidism is a disease in which there is an excessively high level of a hormone called thyroid hormone. The thyroid hormone is produced by the thyroid gland, which is a butterfly shaped gland at the front of the neck. Hyperthyroidism can cause all sorts of symptoms throughout the body and in some ways can be thought of as overrevving the body’s thermostat systems. Therefore, people come in with symptoms such as palpitations and shakiness, overheating and anxiety amongst many other symptoms. In this short video Dr Grant Blashki talks about hyperthyroidism, its mechanisms, its causes, investigations to assess the problem, and treatments.
